Djurgården, the royal park island, is the single best place to cycle in Stockholm, and a bike is the fastest way to cover it. You collect the bike in the city centre and reach Djurgårdsbron in about fifteen minutes, with the Vasa Museum, Skansen and the quiet eastern half of the island all within easy riding distance.

What to see and do around Djurgården

Djurgården is a former royal hunting ground that never got built on, which is why an island a few minutes from the city centre has oak forest, open meadows and a shoreline path all the way round. The museums cluster at the western end, close to the bridge, and the further east you ride the emptier it gets – Blockhusudden, at the far tip, is mostly gravel paths and water views.

  • The Vasa Museum and Skansen, both a short ride from Djurgårdsbron
  • Rosendal, with its palace grounds and garden café, in the middle of the island
  • The shoreline loop along Djurgårdsbrunnsviken, flat and almost entirely traffic-free
  • Blockhusudden at the eastern tip, where the island turns into pure park

A suggested route from our pick-up point to Djurgården

The ride out takes about fifteen minutes and the last third of it follows the water, which makes it one of the nicer approaches to anywhere in the city.

  1. 1From Tegnérlunden 2A, ride east and pick up the cycle lane along Birger Jarlsgatan
  2. 2Continue to Nybroplan and follow Strandvägen with the water on your right
  3. 3Cross Djurgårdsbron onto the island
  4. 4Turn right for the Vasa Museum and Skansen, or left for the quiet shoreline loop around Djurgårdsbrunnsviken

Practical tips for riding here

  • Some of the loveliest paths on the island are gravel rather than asphalt, so keep your tyres firm and your speed moderate.
  • The stretch between Djurgårdsbron and Skansen is the busiest part of the island in summer – the eastern half is empty by comparison.
  • Museum bike racks fill up by late morning; arriving before 11:00 makes parking much easier.
  • A full loop of the island, including stops, is a comfortable two-hour ride on a city bike.
