What to see and do around Gamla Stan (Old Town)

Gamla Stan is the medieval core of Stockholm, sitting on its own island between Norrmalm and Södermalm. The honest advice is to ride around it rather than through it: the lanes inside are cobbled, narrow and full of people on foot, while the quaysides that circle the island are smooth, open and give you the postcard views of the waterfront, the Royal Palace and Riddarholmen church.

• Ride the quayside along Skeppsbron for the classic view across to Skeppsholmen
• Cross to Riddarholmen, the quietest island in central Stockholm, and look back at the City Hall
• Leave the bike at Slottsbacken and walk up to the Royal Palace and Stortorget on foot
• Continue over Strömbron to Kungsträdgården and along the water to Strandvägen

A suggested route from our pick-up point to Gamla Stan

The ride from Tegnérlunden down to the Old Town takes about ten minutes and is almost entirely on separated cycle lanes.

2. 2Turn along Kungsgatan and continue to Kungsträdgården
3. 3Cross Strömbron onto the island and pick up the quay at Skeppsbron
4. 4Circle the island clockwise via Munkbroleden and Riddarholmen, then head back the same way or continue to Södermalm

Practical tips for riding here

• The cobblestones inside Gamla Stan are genuinely rough – slow right down or walk the bike through the alleys.
• Västerlånggatan and Stora Nygatan are pedestrian-first and packed in summer; the quaysides are far better on two wheels.
• The best bike parking is at Slottsbacken, Munkbron and Kornhamnstorg, all within a two-minute walk of Stortorget.
• Ride the island early in the morning if you want the quaysides largely to yourself.
