Do I need an electric bike for Södermalm?

Is Monteliusvägen rideable?

No. It is a narrow cliff-top footpath with a lot of people on it, so walk your bike. The view is worth the short detour on foot.

Södermalm is the hilly island south of the Old Town, and it rewards a bike more than any other part of Stockholm. You collect the bike in the city centre and reach Medborgarplatsen in roughly twelve minutes. We usually recommend an electric bike here, because the climbs up from the water are steep.

What to see and do around Södermalm

Södermalm sits on a granite ridge, which is why it has both the best views in Stockholm and the hardest climbs. The waterside path around Årstaviken is flat and beautiful, the SoFo neighbourhood east of Götgatan is full of small shops and cafés, and Monteliusvägen gives you the view of the City Hall that ends up on most people's camera roll.

A suggested route from our pick-up point to Södermalm

The ride south takes about twelve minutes, and the only real effort is the climb up from Slussen onto the island.

Practical tips for riding here

The climbs from Slussen and Hornstull are the steepest in central Stockholm – an electric bike genuinely changes the day here.
Monteliusvägen is a pedestrian path, so walk your bike rather than riding it.
Götgatan is busy with buses and deliveries; the parallel side streets are calmer and just as quick.
Bike theft is more common on Södermalm than in the parks, so use the included lock and pick a busy, visible rack.
